CIA Committee report: Large majority of MEPs endorses the findings of the CIA inquiry committee

The European Parliament today adopted by a large majority the interim report of the CIA committee. Commenting on the result of the vote, Green MEPs Raul Romeva, the group's co-ordinator for the CIA Committee and Cem Özdemir, Vice-President of the CIA Committee said:

"The large majority of MEPs supporting the findings of the CIA Committee sends a strong signal to EU governments to engage completely with the ongoing investigations and make serious efforts to shed light on the CIA activities on European soil. We welcome that many EPP members abandoned their previous reluctance to support the work of the Committee and finally backed the Fava report.

"The work of the Committee has to be taken further now and we count on the full cooperation by the governments and authorities of EU Member States to fully clarify all allegations of CIA abuses in their jurisdictions. A key priority must be to resolve the outstanding questions regarding the existence of secret prisons in EU countries or candidate countries, given the strong indications that they existed. The European Parliament today raised the standard in the defense of human rights and the respect of the law, which democracies cannot sacrifice for a 'war against terrorism' or any other agenda."

Note to editors: The European Parliament adopted the Fava report with 389 votes in favor, 137 against and 55 abstentions. Rapporteur is Italian MEP Giovanni Claudio Flava.
