Northern Cyprus is on the right track: Greens congratulate President Talat on his inauguration

Commenting on the recent election victory of Mehmet Ali Talat and his inauguration as the new President of Northern Cyprus, Cem Özdemir, Member of the Foreign Affairs Committee in the European Parliament, said:

"Northern Cyprus will see a new president on Sunday and with it the chance for a new political era. The clear election victory of the former head of government Mehmet Ali Talat is a very positive sign and a great opportunity for the future of the island. The result has demonstrated anew that the majority of the Turkish Cypriots clearly supports reunification and sees a place for itself in the European Union. In his new capacity as President we wish him good fortune and we look forward to future cooperation.

"However, the diplomatic ball is in the hands of the Republic of Cyprus and its president, Tassos Papadopoulos. This side must also act constructively and finally present a response to the Annan Plan, so that an agreement might be reached. Furthermore, it must give up its blockade in the Council of Ministers and clear the way for direct trade and the long-promised EU financial assistance.

The Luxembourg presidency has been called upon to develop a passable compromise that will end the political isolation of the North and open up economic prospects."
