Greens show their colours in German politics
The German Green Party appears to be taking a leaf out of Barack Obama’s book, pushing a policy of "change”. Cem Ozdemir is the first ethnic Turkish politician to lead a major party. He has been elected co-chairman of the Green Party.
"Dear friends, I want to fight with you for a society for everybody, no matter what their origin, no matter where they come from, be it Kazakhstan or Anatoly. Everybody has the same importance for us. I will fight to have this kind of society in Germany,” he told his supporters.
His co-chairman Claudia Roth is on the same page: "I want to battle with you against political fatigue, against popularism of the right and the left, because it is a poison for democracy in our country.”
The Green Party is rejecting any comparisons with the US president-elect, but it will certainly be hoping to mirror his success in next year’s election.
